Hungarian Names
In Hungary, it is common practice to write your family name first, followed by your given name which for obvious reasons it’s not called a "first" name anymore, as it is other Western countries. This practice is a result of Hungarian grammar and the way in which family names originated. Since family names were originally descriptive phrases used to identify people, these phrases functioned like adjectives.
For instance:
Kiss János
where 'Kiss' is not only the last (family) name but it also used to describe a person through a descriptive adjective, here with the meaning: Short or Small
John - being the given name (Hungarian equivalent: János)
Kovács Júlia
'Kovács' - family name, meaning: Blacksmith
'Júlia' - English equivalent: Julia
Given names:
As in all cultures, the origin of Hungarian names is closely related to the religious and dynastic history of the country.
The most commonly used given names and arguably the most widespread are those which occur only in the Hungarian language.
These names usually originated from the Hun tribes or the old Hungarian language and became very popular mainly since the second half of the 20th century.
