Top 10 Hungarian Movies

If it's Hungarian movies you are interested in, you will appreciate the Hungarian film scene. Although Hungary hosted a number of international movies with its famous venues, nevertheless it has its own chain of cinema art which specialize in the latest releases and obscure films from Eastern and Western Europe.
The best time to catch a Hungarian movie is during the two major film festivals in Budapest, the Hungarian Film Week, held in February and the Titanic International Filmfestival, held in April.
You can of course choose from a vast number of blockbusters, however here are the ones that landed on my top list of favourite Hungarian movies.

Állítsátok meg Terézanyut! (2004)

Genres: Comedy\Romance
Storyline:
This film is about a girl who wants to find herself and love in this big, wild and cruel world. She has everything: a boyfriend, a family, a job but she feels these are not the perfect ones, just the "almost perfect ones", so she try to find the real happiness. I seen this film many times and I always found something cute in almost every moment: a smile, few seconds of the beautiful soundtrack, a word, a move, etc. This movie is so airy and fragile as the leading character. I think she is beautiful and sensitive, with a lot of feelings and doubts. You're on the wrong way if you compare to Bridget Jones. Bridget is too funny character to perform the real life of the singles (with its every sadness and happiness), Kéki Kata is the perfect one to this job... :)

S.O.S. Szerelem (2007) Genres: Comedy\Romance

Storyline:
The story premise is rather interesting to begin with:
A Hungarian matchmaker is hit by the arrows of cupid himself when he tries to help a client conquer the woman of his life. There exists a dating agency “SOS Love!” (Yes, with the exclamation mark to indicate the joy of being in love) which helps men to get the women of their dreams fall in love with them. And this is done through the assistance of devices like closed circuit televisions, microphones, mobile phones and other gadgets which would make James Bond proud. Along the way, you get side plots like business rivalry from another agency (that one helps women seduce men) and the owner being unlucky in love himself. And everyone in the movie is in store for a happy ending.

Adventurers (Original title: Kalandorok 2008)

Genres: Drama
Storyline:
This film is very much relevant to all of us in the current period of economic turmoil where each penny is spent wisely by people all over the world. Kalandorok shows the economic mess in which some ordinary Hungarians have put themselves. The film is a grim reminder of how this economic upheaval impacts their family ties. Kalandorok can also be defined in an alternative manner as a sensible road movie with comic undertones. It features some particularly nice musical tracks such as About A Girl Kurt Cobain and a Hungarian version of the famous French song "Le Vent Nous Portera" by Noir Désir.Kalandorok is a comic film different from traditional psychological films for which Hungary has always been famous.

The massive labyrinthine netherworld that is the Budapest subway system provides the stunning setting for ‘Kontroll’,  a high-style, high-speed romantic thriller in which the lives of assorted outcasts, lovers, and dreamers intersect and collide. Hungarian director Krisztina Goda's witty and whimsical romantic comedy Just Sex and Nothing Else follows the travails of Dora (Judit Schell), a woman of the theater in her early-mid thirties. Unnerved by the ticking of her own biological clock, Dora is nonetheless somewhat comforted by the kn owledge that she'll soon be in a secure, loving marriage with a new husband - that is, until her shocking discovery that the fiancé is already married to someone else. Confronted by her intended's furious wife, Dora backs out onto a window ledge, and bumps into cocky actor Tamas (Sandor Csanyi) - with whom she strikes up an instant erotic relationship. It's just another day at the Glass Tiger Cafe, which means anything could happen and plenty usually does in this easygoing Hungarian comedy. Star Peter Rudolph also directed the film, in collaboration with Ivan Kapitany, and co-wrote the screenplay. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
