All Finno-Ugrian languages are thought to have derived from a common proto-language, Proto-Uralic which was spoken some 6000 years ago (or even earlier) in the forest zone of Northern Eurasia. There are about 14.5 million native speakers of Hungarian or Magyar, as it is called in Hungary. 9.5–10 million live Hungary while further two million speakers live outside. The largest groups of Hungarian speakers outside Hungary can be found in Romania (1.4 million Hungarians), Slovakia, Serbia, Ukraine, Croatia, Austria, and Slovenia, as well as about a million people spread in other parts of the world. A considerable number of Hungarian speakers live in the US (450,000).

In Romania it is an official language at local level in all communes, towns and municipalities with an ethnic Hungarian population of over 20%.
