Transl.Net Translations - English

English Language:

English is the most widespread language in the world, spoken by more than 500 million. It is also arguably the richest in vocabulary; the Oxford English Dictionary lists about 500,000 words, and a further half-million technical and scientific terms remain uncatalogued. English is the official language of about 45 nations. It is the mother tongue of about 60 million persons in the British Isles, from where it spread to many other parts of the world owing to British exploring, colonizing, and empire-building from the 17th through 19th century.

English originated from several dialects, now collectively termed Old English, which were brought to Great Britain by Anglo-Saxon settlers beginning in the 5th century. The language was influenced by the Old Norse language of Viking invaders.

Interesting fact: The Old Norse word "baggir" was adopted in Britain with the Vikings, but the Brits shortened it to "bag" and used it to describe that thing you use to carry things around with you. "Baggir" fell out of fashion with the Norwegians, but in modern times, the word "bag" made its way back across the North Sea and now Norwegians say "bag" without realising its origins.

At the time of the Norman conquest, Old English developed into Middle English, borrowing heavily from the Norman (Anglo-French) vocabulary and spelling conventions. The etymology of the word "English" is a derivation from 12th century Old English: englisc or Engle, and plural form Angles; definition of, relating to, or characteristic of England. Modern English developed with the Great Vowel Shift that began in 15th-century England, and continues to adopt foreign words from a variety of languages, as well as coining new words.
